WHO'S WATCHING YOU? Surveillance, Privacy & Government Power

The Idaho Sheriff · 2 months ago

The short version: The Idaho Sheriff's livestream with Dan & Dawna Wilson puts ALPR surveillance and government overreach on the table — a conversation worth having everywhere, not just Idaho.

Our Take

We don't know exactly what Dan and Dawna Wilson will say Wednesday night, but the fact that a sheriff's platform is hosting a live conversation titled "Who's Watching You?" is itself worth noting. Law enforcement voices questioning surveillance power out loud, in public, is still rare enough to matter — even if the specifics stay vague until the broadcast drops.

That's the real value of shows like this: they put "surveillance, privacy, and government power" in the same sentence for an audience that might otherwise never think about what a license plate reader on their street corner is actually doing. Flock Safety and similar ALPR networks have spread into thousands of communities with little public debate, often approved in a single council vote with no mention of data retention, sharing agreements, or who gets to query the system. A conversation that asks "who's watching you" is a conversation about exactly that infrastructure.

We'll be watching to see whether the discussion gets specific about Flock-style networks, or stays in the realm of general liberty talk. Either way, if you want to know what's actually watching you, check our camera map for ALPRs near you, and if you're ready to push back, our take-action page has the tools to start.
