Ripped from the Ground: Palm Bay Public Works Hauls Away Defunded Flock Camera Poles

Thomas Gaume · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Palm Bay's 4-1 vote to kill its Flock program turned into literal removal within a day — proof that organized pushback can win.

Our Take

Credit to Thomas Gaume for getting boots on the ground fast enough to film Palm Bay Public Works crews yanking Flock poles out of the dirt less than a day after the city council voted 4-1 to defund the program. That speed matters. It's one thing for a council to pass a resolution; it's another to watch the hardware actually hit a flatbed truck. This is what accountability looks like when it's not just symbolic.

Palm Bay joins a short but growing list of cities that looked at the cost, the mission creep, and the lack of hard evidence that ALPR dragnets reduce crime, and decided the surveillance wasn't worth the tradeoff. One council member's dissent is worth watching too — these votes are rarely unanimous, and the arguments made on both sides tend to resurface in the next town having the same debate. If you're in a community currently fighting this fight, footage like this is useful ammunition.

Check our map to see if Flock or similar ALPR systems are running near you, and if you want to push your own city toward a vote like Palm Bay's, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
