Is Your Car Becoming Part of a Surveillance Network?

Privacy Bee · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Privacy Bee's video connects connected-car data and ALPRs into one surveillance picture — and the overlap is exactly why this fight matters now.

Our Take

Credit to Privacy Bee for zooming out on this one. Most coverage treats license plate readers and connected-car telematics as separate stories, but they're really two arms of the same beast: a system designed to know where your car is, who's driving it, and where it's been, all without a warrant. When you stack Flock Safety's camera network on top of the data your own vehicle may already be transmitting, you get a surveillance dragnet that doesn't need a single warrant to track your daily movements.

What makes this especially galling is how quietly it's happened. Nobody voted to put a camera on every corner or to let their car report its location to third parties. These systems got rolled out through police department contracts and manufacturer fine print, and most people have no idea the extent of it until they go looking. That's the whole point of watchdog work like this video and like what we do here — dragging the infrastructure into the light.

If this topic hits home, go see what's actually deployed near you on our camera map, and if you want to push back on your city council or state legislature, our take-action page has concrete steps. Awareness is step one, but it doesn't stop there.
