How Technology Keeps Us Safe - Flock Safety

City of Lake Forest, CA · 6 years ago

The short version: Lake Forest's own town hall video is essentially a promotional reel for Flock Safety and OC Sheriff's aerial surveillance, with little room for public skepticism.

Our Take

This clip, produced by the City of Lake Forest, CA, is less an independent report than a government-sanctioned sales pitch. When the agency deploying the cameras also controls the town hall format, the Zoom, and the framing, don't expect hard questions about retention windows, data sharing with ICE or other agencies, or false-positive stops. "How Technology Keeps Us Safe" is the headline; what's missing is how technology keeps a permanent record of where you drive, sold to residents as a package deal alongside helicopters and drones.

Ten ALPR cameras might sound modest, but Flock's real product is the network effect — plate reads get pooled across cities and counties, searchable well beyond Lake Forest's limits. Pairing that with aerial assets normalizes a layered surveillance stack where nobody has to ask permission to track your movements, they just log in. That's the pitch dressed up as public safety, and it's worth remembering that a town hall run by the vendor's partners isn't the same as independent oversight.

If you want to see whether Lake Forest's cameras — or ones near you — are part of this expanding network, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch these systems get rubber-stamped, our take-action page has steps for pushing your own city council toward real transparency.
