Evade ALPR's with this one weird trick

SquidTips · 2 months ago

The short version: SquidTips dangles a quick fix for dodging plate readers, but the real defense is knowing where cameras are and organizing to get them removed.

Our Take

SquidTips frames this one as a neighborly security tip, and we get the appeal — nobody likes the idea of a government or private database logging every drive to the grocery store. But "one weird trick" videos about beating ALPR cameras tend to oversell a single hack while skating past the bigger picture: these systems are networked, shared across agencies, and often run by a private company (Flock Safety) with little public oversight. A clever workaround for one camera doesn't do much when your plate gets logged at the next ten intersections anyway.

That's the real problem DeFlock exists to document. Evasion tricks are a personal band-aid; the actual fix is transparency and accountability — knowing exactly where these cameras are, who's watching the footage, and pushing your city council to answer for it. We'd rather see people spend that energy mapping their town's ALPR network than testing whether a mud flap fools a camera for one more day.

Credit to SquidTips for getting people thinking about surveillance at all — that's half the battle. If you want to do something that actually scales, check our camera map to see what's already logged near you, and hit take-action for ways to push back on the policy side, not just the pavement side.
