Palm Bay orders immediate suspension of FLOCK cameras

FOX 35 Orlando · 2 months ago

The short version: Palm Bay's abrupt Flock shutdown over permitting problems shows how little scrutiny these camera networks get before they go live.

Our Take

Credit to FOX 35 Orlando for catching this one: a city manager in Palm Bay found that the Flock Safety ALPR system may have been installed without proper permits, and the whole network got an immediate suspension order. That's a remarkable admission. These cameras typically go up fast, often sold to city councils as a turnkey public-safety fix, with little independent review of zoning, procurement, or data-handling rules before the hardware is bolted to a pole.

What's notable here isn't just the paperwork failure — it's what that failure implies. If a city can't say for certain its own surveillance cameras were lawfully permitted, what confidence should residents have that the data those cameras collected was handled properly, retained for the right amount of time, or shared only with agencies that had legitimate access? Permitting gaps are usually the symptom; weak oversight of the whole program is the disease.

Palm Bay deserves some credit for pausing instead of quietly letting it slide. But a 'pending review' suspension is not the same as accountability, and residents should be asking hard questions about who approved this system, what data already left the city, and whether it comes back online with real guardrails.
