City Council Regular Meeting

AlbanyKALB · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Albany's city council livestream is a reminder that ALPR contracts get decided in rooms like this one, often with little public pushback.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: AlbanyKALB does the unglamorous work of broadcasting routine council meetings so residents can actually see how local government operates, Comcast Channel 33 and all. We're flagging this one because surveillance tech decisions — including whether to bankroll a Flock Safety ALPR contract — rarely get debated anywhere else. They get buried in consent agendas, budget line items, and "public safety" presentations that sail through with a handful of public comments, if that.

That's exactly why these meetings matter more than their production values suggest. Once a city council signs off on a network of automated license plate readers, the cameras go up fast and the data-sharing agreements with other agencies get a lot harder to unwind. Residents who want a say need to show up before the vote, not after the poles are in the ground, and ask hard questions about retention periods, who gets access to the data, and what oversight actually looks like.

If Albany is moving on ALPRs, it won't be the last city council to do so quietly this year. Check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and use our take-action resources if you want to push your own local government to slow down and answer for it.
