Flock Cameras: Are They Abused? Public Speaks Out! #shorts

Double Daves Podcast · 5 months ago

The short version: A short-form clip from Double Daves Podcast puts everyday people on the record about Flock cameras, and their gut reaction is distrust.

Our Take

Double Daves Podcast did something simple that Flock's own PR team never seems to do: stuck a microphone in front of regular people and asked what they think about a network of cameras logging their license plates. The answers, unsurprisingly, lean toward unease. You don't need a policy degree to feel the wrongness of a private company and local police quietly building a searchable record of where your car has been.

That instinct is worth taking seriously. Flock's pitch is always about solving crime, but the architecture doesn't discriminate between a wanted suspect and a grandmother driving to church. Every plate gets scanned, timestamped, and stored, and that data can be shared across jurisdictions in ways most city councils never fully debate in public before signing the contract. When a podcast has to go find that public discussion on a sidewalk because it isn't happening in council chambers, that's a sign the process is backwards.

Credit to Double Daves Podcast for putting ordinary voices on the record instead of just quoting a company press release. If this clip has you wondering how many of these cameras are already watching your own commute, check our camera map to see what's nearby, and visit our take-action page for ways to push back before your city quietly renews its contract.
