Santa Cruz vs the Surveillance State
The short version: KSQD's Talk of the Bay digs into Santa Cruz's surveillance creep, and it's a reminder that even famously progressive towns aren't immune to Flock's pitch.
Our Take
Credit to Chris Krohn and KSQD for giving local airtime to a conversation that usually gets buried in a city council consent agenda. Santa Cruz has a reputation as a privacy-minded city, which makes it a useful test case: if ALPR networks can quietly take root there, they can take root anywhere. The pattern is always the same — a vendor demo, a public safety pitch, a vague promise about "just helping solve crime," and suddenly every car entering town is logged, timestamped, and stored in a database that outlives the officials who approved it.
What rarely gets discussed in these council pitches is who actually has access to that data once it exists — other agencies, federal partners, data brokers, whoever Flock decides to share with next. Local reporting and call-in shows like this one matter because they put residents' actual concerns on record before the contract gets renewed quietly for another year.
If you want to see whether Santa Cruz or your own neighborhood already has these cameras installed, check our map, and if you'd rather not wait for a city council to have this debate for you, our take-action page has steps for pushing back.
