Flock Camera Errors Total Over 100 Million Per Month

Learn IT with Mr. P · 3 months ago

The short version: A viral report on a Flock false-positive stolen-vehicle stop underscores how error-prone ALPR networks can turn routine drives into felony traffic stops.

Our Take

Credit to Joel Feder, covered by Mr. P's channel, for digging into the numbers behind Flock Safety's error rate. A hundred million misreads a month isn't a rounding error — it's a system working exactly as designed, just not the way Flock's marketing implies. These cameras aren't passively logging plates; they're actively feeding law enforcement "hits" that trigger stops, and when the hit is wrong, the person behind the wheel pays the price in handcuffs and a felony stop at gunpoint, not the vendor.

This is the core problem with outsourcing public safety judgment to a black-box algorithm with no meaningful audit trail. Flock markets near-perfect accuracy to city councils while the lived reality for drivers is a dragnet that treats every plate as a suspect until proven otherwise. One misread shouldn't be able to escalate into a felony stop, but that's exactly the architecture being built out block by block in towns that never got a real public debate about it.

If you want to know whether your street already has one of these cameras watching you, check our map, and if you're ready to push back on your local government, our take-action page has the tools to start.
