Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) - SYNERGY LABS I ITMS

SynergyLabs Team · 6 years ago

The short version: A vendor demo for SynergyLabs' ANPR/ITMS system shows, in plain corporate language, exactly how plate-reading networks are built and sold as routine infrastructure.

Our Take

This isn't a Flock Safety ad, but it might as well be one — swap the logo and the pitch is identical. SynergyLabs Team's product reel for its ANPR/ITMS platform reads like a checklist of everything privacy advocates warn about: continuous video capture of every plate in view, 80-95% OCR accuracy claims, real-time 'hotlist' alerts, and cross-camera search for 'similar plates.' That last feature is the quiet bombshell. It means the system isn't just matching exact plates against a wanted list — it's pattern-matching vehicles across multiple cameras, which is the building block of location tracking, not just law enforcement tip-offs.

What's notable is how mundane this all sounds in vendor language. 'Continuous traffic safety,' 'database storage,' 'real-time alerts' — the marketing never mentions retention periods, oversight, audit trails, or who gets access to that database once a plate is logged. That's by design. Companies selling this hardware to municipalities and highway authorities are selling infrastructure, not policy, and the accountability gap is where mass surveillance quietly takes root — whether the badge on the camera says Flock, SynergyLabs, or something else entirely.

This is exactly why we track deployments camera by camera. Check our map to see what's already watching your roads, and visit take action if you want to push back on unaccountable plate-reader expansion in your community.
