How Much Privacy Would You Trade for Safety? #Shorts

DeadHourHQ · 2 months ago

The short version: DeadHourHQ's short asks the right question—how much privacy for safety—but the real problem is that nobody's actually being asked.

Our Take

Credit to DeadHourHQ for boiling the Flock debate down to one blunt question: how much privacy are you willing to trade for safety? It's the right question to ask, because it's the one Flock Safety and local police departments almost never put to the public before rolling out networks of automated license plate readers on city streets.

The trouble is that "trade" implies a negotiation, a choice, a vote. In most towns, there wasn't one. A police chief signs a contract, a few cameras go up on utility poles, and suddenly every plate that passes is logged, time-stamped, and stored in a database that can be queried by agencies far outside the jurisdiction that installed it. That's not a trade — it's a fait accompli dressed up as a safety upgrade, and the short format of this video captures just how quickly that tradeoff gets flattened into a soundbite instead of a real policy debate.

If you want to see whether that tradeoff has already been made in your neighborhood, check our camera map — and if you'd rather not leave the decision to a city council meeting nobody attended, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back.
