LMPD detective investigated for more alleged Flock misuse months after suspension in separate cas...

The short version: A second misuse probe against the same LMPD detective shows Flock's 'audit trail' safeguard means little without real consequences for abuse.

Our Take

Credit to WDRB and WAVE for staying on this story. A Louisville Metro PD detective already suspended once for alleged Flock Safety misuse is now reportedly under investigation again for the same kind of behavior. If that pattern holds up, it's a pretty blunt answer to the industry talking point that ALPR networks are "self-policing" because every search leaves a log. A log only matters if someone actually reads it and acts before the misuse repeats.

This is the part of the surveillance debate that doesn't get enough attention: it's not just whether cameras exist, it's who gets to query a database that can map out a person's entire driving history, and what happens when they use that access for reasons that have nothing to do with a warrant or an active case. One suspension clearly wasn't enough of a deterrent here. That should worry anyone in a city where Flock cameras are already running, because the technology is only as trustworthy as the department's willingness to discipline its own.

We keep track of where these camera networks are deployed and push for real audit and retention policies with teeth. Check the map to see what's watching your neighborhood, and if you want to push back on unchecked access in your community, our take-action page has a place to start.
