FWPD begins audio testing on Flock cameras

WANE 15 News · 5 months ago

The short version: Fort Wayne police are reportedly testing audio capabilities on Flock cameras, raising fresh questions about how far these 'license plate readers' are expanding beyond plates.

Our Take

Credit to WANE 15 News for catching this one: Fort Wayne PD is piloting audio testing on its Flock Safety cameras. That's worth pausing on. Flock sold these systems to the public as a way to catch stolen cars and read plates — not as always-on listening devices parked on street corners. Every time a new sensor type gets bolted onto this network, the mission creeps a little further from the original pitch, usually with zero public hearing before it happens.

Audio capture near public cameras opens a much messier legal and ethical can of worms than plate reads. Conversations, arguments, phone calls on a sidewalk — none of that was supposed to be on the table when cities approved these contracts. We don't know yet exactly what FWPD is testing or how the data will be stored, shared, or retained, and we're not going to speculate. But the pattern is familiar: quiet pilot first, expanded capability later, public told after the fact.

This is exactly why tracking where these systems are and what they're capable of matters. Check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and if you want to push back on expansion like this before it's normalized, our take-action page has tools to get started.
