Another day, another local news segment where a sheriff's office hands out a press-release-ready anecdote and a TV station runs with it unquestioned. Credit to News4JAX for covering the story, but "Flock camera helps catch fugitive" is the industry's favorite talking point precisely because it's the easy part of the story. What almost never makes the broadcast is how many thousands of license plates belonging to ordinary Columbia County residents were logged, timestamped, and stored that same day just so this one hit could happen.
That's the tradeoff nobody asked the public to sign off on. A single arrest gets a press conference; the permanent database of everyone else's movements gets silence. Sheriff's offices love to cite the wins because the wins are visible — the surveillance net dragging in innocent commuters, churchgoers, and delivery drivers is not something you put on the evening news.
