Mass Surveillance, Police Misuse, and Who Controls Your Flock Cameras with Flock CEO, Garret Langley

All-In Podcast · 2 months ago

The short version: Flock's CEO gets a friendly tech-podcast stage to spin mass surveillance as a solved problem, while the real accountability questions go mostly unasked.

Our Take

Garret Langley sat down with the All-In Podcast crew for nearly an hour, and it's worth watching precisely because of how comfortable that couch is. This isn't an adversarial interview — it's a founder-to-founder chat with hosts who make their living evangelizing tech disruption. So when Langley leans on lines like "7 days of retention solves 90% of crimes" or frames vandalism of his cameras as a felony issue, nobody pushes back with the obvious follow-up: solves according to whom, and at what cost to everyone who was never suspected of a crime in the first place?

Credit where it's due — the segment on Flock's audit tool catching Georgia officers who ran plates for personal reasons is a real data point, and it cuts both ways. Yes, it shows some abuse gets caught. It also confirms what we've said all along: these networks get misused by the very people who are supposed to be trusted with them, and the only reason we know about it is that an audit trail happened to exist. Multiply that by the thousands of agencies now plugged into Flock's national lookup system, most of which don't get a friendly podcast spotlight when their officers get caught.

The back half of the conversation — AI, drones, facial recognition, 20 cities turning cameras back on after backlash — is the part that should actually worry you. Predictive policing and facial recognition are the next products being teed up, and "we're being careful" from the guy selling the cameras isn't oversight, it's marketing. If you want to know whether one of these cameras is already on your street, check our camera map, and if you'd rather your city not be the next data point in someone else's pitch deck, see what you can do on our take action page.
