The short version: A viral short from 'You Awake Yet?' uses humor to needle Americans about Flock cameras and Big Brother creep, proving satire can open doors that spreadsheets can't.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: 'You Awake Yet?' is doing the meme-and-punchline version of what we do with maps and FOIA requests — getting people to actually notice the ALPR camera bolted to the pole they drive past every day. The hashtag soup (#flock #masssurveillance #bigbrother) tells you exactly who the intended audience is: people who haven't yet clocked that Flock Safety's network has quietly become one of the largest license-plate tracking systems in the country, built without most residents ever voting on it.
Comedy is a legitimate on-ramp here. Most people don't read city council minutes or vendor contracts, but they'll watch a 30-second short that makes them laugh and then makes them uneasy. That discomfort is the point — a nationwide grid of cameras logging where you drive, who you're with, and when, isn't a hypothetical dystopia, it's a line item in your local police budget right now.
If this short made you raise an eyebrow, don't stop at the laugh. Go see whether your own neighborhood is wired up on our camera map, and if it is, check take-action for how to push back at your next city council meeting.
