How Flock Cameras Caught Austin's Shooting Suspects

This Week in Startups Clips · 5 months ago

The short version: A startup-world clip touts Flock cameras solving an Austin shooting, but 'it caught the bad guy' isn't the whole story of a nationwide ALPR dragnet.

Our Take

This Week in Startups Clips is doing what tech media does best: taking a single feel-good law enforcement anecdote and turning it into a pitch for how great the technology is. Flock Safety loves these stories because they're the entire marketing playbook in one clip — a camera caught a bad guy, therefore the thousands of cameras logging every other driver's movements in that same city are justified. We'd just note that "it helped solve a case" has never been the question. Of course a system that photographs every license plate that passes will occasionally produce a useful lead. The question is what happens to the other 99.9% of plates scanned that have nothing to do with any crime, who's storing that data, for how long, and who else gets to query it.

Austin is a good example of why that matters. Flock's network isn't a local tool confined to one department's jurisdiction — it's a shared, searchable database that other agencies, and in some documented cases federal agencies, can tap into with little public oversight. A win in one case doesn't tell you anything about the thousands of searches run for reasons that never make headlines: immigration status checks, tracking someone's ex, or fishing expeditions with no warrant attached. Credit to the channel for surfacing the story, but the framing conveniently skips all of that.

If you want to know whether your own block is already wired into this network, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch this expand quietly, see what you can do about it.
