Flock Cameras: Real Safety for Our Citizens? #shorts

Who is this? Podcast · 3 months ago

The short version: A short pro-Flock video from Who is this? Podcast leans on the familiar "catching criminals" pitch while treating privacy concerns as an afterthought.

Our Take

Credit to Who is this? Podcast for keeping the Flock conversation visible, but this clip follows a script we've seen a hundred times: lead with the dramatic stolen-car recovery, wave at "privacy concerns," and move on before anyone asks who actually has access to this data, how long it's stored, or which agencies are quietly sharing it across state lines. "Vital for catching criminals" is doing a lot of work in that description, and it's not backed up by the kind of independent audits that would actually justify blanket, suspicionless tracking of every driver in a town.

The uncomfortable truth is that a network built to flag stolen vehicles is the exact same network that logs where you go to church, who you visit, and when you leave town — permanently, searchable, and increasingly shared well beyond the police department that installed the camera. "Real safety" framing skips past that tradeoff entirely, treating mass retention as a neutral byproduct instead of the whole point of concern.

If you want to see how far this has actually spread, check our camera map before buying the pitch that this is just about catching bad guys. And if your town is debating a Flock contract, our take-action page has the questions your city council should be forced to answer before they sign anything.
