Free Press Takes WILD Stance On Flock Cameras

The Young Turks · 2 months ago

The short version: TYT's Cenk Uygur and Dr. Elliot Morgan call out The Free Press for cheerleading Flock's ALPR network instead of questioning it, and we're glad someone in the mainstream is finally asking the hard questions.

Our Take

It says something when a segment produced by a self-styled "free press" outlet ends up sounding like a Flock Safety press release. Cenk Uygur and Dr. Elliot Morgan pick that apart on The Young Turks, and the core problem they're flagging is the one we hammer on constantly: these cameras aren't just reading plates, they're building a searchable, retroactive map of everywhere you drive, shared across thousands of police departments with almost no public oversight of who gets access or why.

"Glowing" coverage of surveillance infrastructure is exactly how it spreads unchecked. Local councils get sold the pitch as a crime-fighting tool, nobody asks about data retention, audit logs, or federal/ICE access, and six months later there's a blanket of always-on cameras logging every car that passes. The fact that a national outlet is being called out for skipping that scrutiny is a good sign that more people are starting to notice the pattern.

We built our camera map precisely because most residents have no idea how many of these units are already watching their commute, and our take-action page has the tools to push back at the local level before it becomes permanent infrastructure. Credit to Uygur and Morgan for pushing back on the narrative — that's the kind of pressure that keeps this conversation honest.
