RayHunter: Your EFF-Developed Privacy Tool #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies LLC spotlights EFF's open-source RayHunter tool for sniffing out rogue cell towers and IMSI catchers, reminding us surveillance isn't just cameras on poles.

Our Take

Credit to STS Technologies LLC for putting a spotlight on RayHunter, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's open-source project that turns a cheap Orbic mobile hotspot into a homemade IMSI-catcher detector. It's a reminder that the surveillance dragnet isn't limited to the automated license plate readers we track — cell-site simulators (aka Stingrays) have been quietly vacuuming up phone metadata from unsuspecting crowds for over a decade, often with little public disclosure from the agencies running them.

The video also happens to double as an ad for a pre-flashed RayHunter device sold through STS Collective. Worth noting: RayHunter is free and open-source straight from the EFF, so anyone comfortable flashing firmware can build their own for the cost of a used Orbic device. If you buy a pre-built one instead, that's a convenience purchase, not a requirement — and as always, verify any third-party seller's claims and code against the official EFF repo before trusting it with your privacy.

Tools like this matter because they put detection power back in the hands of ordinary people instead of leaving surveillance entirely one-sided. The same logic drives our own work cataloging Flock Safety ALPR cameras block by block — sunlight is the best disinfectant. Check our camera map to see what's been deployed near you, and hit up take-action if you want to push back on unchecked surveillance infrastructure in your town.
