Ouispy Battery Build - Portable Flock Camera Detector

HackedExistence · 5 months ago

The short version: HackedExistence shows how to 3D print a portable battery case for the OuiSpy device, making DIY Flock camera detection easier to carry around.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: HackedExistence is doing the unglamorous work of taking an open-source detection tool and making it actually usable in the field. A 3D-printed case with battery, charging circuit, and power switch sounds like a small thing, but it's the difference between a bench project and something you can clip to a backpack and forget about until it beeps. That's the gap between 'cool hobbyist demo' and 'tool regular people use to document the surveillance grid around them.'

This matters because Flock Safety and its ALPR cousins don't exactly advertise where their cameras are. Police departments and HOAs tend to treat camera locations like trade secrets, which leaves residents guessing about how much of their daily movement is being logged into a searchable database. Projects like OuiSpy flip that script a little — they give ordinary people a way to detect and map readers instead of just trusting a company's PR about 'public safety.' We'd rather see ten more videos like this than another press release.

If you want to see what's already been found and logged, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on a reader going up in your town, our take-action page has the playbook.
