Some Flock cameras might be literal road hazards

The Unraveling | Yersocialistdad · 2 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber flags that some Flock Safety ALPR installations may be physically unsafe, a reminder that surveillance sprawl often comes with zero scrutiny of basic safety or placement standards.

Our Take

Credit to Yersocialistdad on The Unraveling for pointing a camera at the cameras literally in the way. Most Flock debates focus on data retention and warrantless access, but this video raises a more basic question: who's actually checking where these poles get planted? If a camera rig can become a hazard to drivers or pedestrians, that's a sign these deployments are happening with the same lack of oversight that lets police departments quietly roll out ALPR networks without public hearings, engineering review, or community sign-off.

That's the pattern we track at DeFlock: speed over scrutiny. Flock and its police partners move fast to blanket corridors with cameras, and basic questions — about siting, safety, signage, maintenance — get treated as afterthoughts, if they're asked at all. A pole that's a road hazard is a small, visible symptom of a much bigger problem: infrastructure installed with no meaningful public process behind it.

If you want to see how saturated your own streets already are, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be asking harder questions before approving the next contract, our take-action page has tools to help you show up and push back.
