Your School Bus Is Now A License Plate Reader

Car Coach Reports · 2 months ago

The short version: Car Coach Reports exposes how school bus stop-arm cameras, sold as child-safety tools, may double as roving ALPR surveillance feeding data far beyond traffic enforcement.

Our Take

Car Coach Reports lays out a pitch we've heard a hundred times before: a camera goes up to catch the one jerk who blows past a stopped school bus with its lights flashing. Nobody's going to argue against protecting kids at the bus stop. But as the video details, that camera isn't just watching for stop-arm violations anymore — it's reading plates, logging timestamps and GPS, and potentially routing that data into the same surveillance pipelines we've been tracking with Flock and other ALPR vendors for months. The bus becomes a mobile checkpoint rolling through your neighborhood twice a day, every school day, and almost nobody voted on that.

This is the pattern we keep seeing: a narrow, sympathetic use case (catch reckless drivers near kids) becomes the Trojan horse for a much broader location-tracking system, often with little public debate about who gets access to the data, how long it's kept, or what else it gets used for once it exists. Once a plate-reading network is built, the stated purpose on day one rarely stays the purpose on day 500. School districts and parents deserve a real conversation about that before more buses get wired up.
