Two teens injured in hit-and-run; suspect arrested

ABC10 · 3 weeks ago

The short version: ABC10 reports a Flock camera hit helped Lincoln police nab a hit-and-run suspect who injured two teens on e-scooters.

Our Take

Credit to ABC10 for the local reporting here — nobody wants to see kids hurt by a driver who speeds off, and if a camera hit helped police make an arrest, that's a real result. These are the stories Flock Safety loves to hand reporters, because they're simple, sympathetic, and easy to turn into a press release about how ALPR networks "solve crimes."

What rarely makes the segment is the other side of the ledger: every one of these cameras is also logging the plate of every commuter, churchgoer, protester, and ex who drives past, whether or not they're suspected of anything. One hit-and-run case doesn't tell you how many searches ran through that database last month, who had access, or how long the footage sits before it's purged. Lincoln isn't unique — this is the same system quietly blanketing thousands of towns.

If you want to know whether your own neighborhood is wired up, check our camera map, and if you'd rather your city debate retention rules and audits before adding more eyes on the road, see take action for how to push back at the local level.
