Deputy taken into custody after allegedly misusing Flock

Atlanta News First · 1 month ago

The short version: A Clayton County sheriff's deputy was taken into custody after allegedly misusing a Flock Safety license plate reader, Atlanta News First reports.

Our Take

This is the story Flock Safety doesn't want in its sales pitch. The company loves to tell city councils that every search is logged, every officer is accountable, and misuse just can't slip through. Then a Clayton County deputy allegedly does exactly that, and now faces charges for it. Credit to Atlanta News First for digging into what happens when the person with badge-level access decides the rules don't apply to them.

Audit logs only matter if someone is actually reviewing them, and most of what the public knows about ALPR misuse comes out after the fact, usually through a leak, a lawsuit, or a reporter's public-records request. Departments rarely volunteer these numbers, and when they do, they're often framed as the exception that proves the system works. One arrest doesn't tell us how many queries never get flagged.

Every camera in this network is a potential pressure point, whether it's an outside hacker, a stalker ex, or a deputy pulling plates for reasons that have nothing to do with public safety. If you want to know whether Flock has eyes on your neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you think your city shouldn't be writing blank checks for this kind of exposure, see what you can do on our take action page.
