Cost of license plate reader tech in Seminole County raises concerns among residents

WESH 2 News · 1 month ago

The short version: WESH 2 News reports Seminole County residents are questioning the price tag on Flock's ALPR system, and we're asking the same thing.

Our Take

Credit to WESH 2 News for digging into what local taxpayers are actually paying for Flock Safety's camera network in Seminole County. These contracts routinely run into six figures annually, and the pitch is always the same: public safety, solved crimes, peace of mind. What rarely gets mentioned up front is that residents are bankrolling a surveillance system that logs their own movements, every day, whether or not they've ever been suspected of anything.

The cost angle matters because it's one of the few places where this debate gets a real public hearing. Police departments don't usually ask permission to watch you — but they do have to ask a county commission for money, and that's where residents finally get a seat at the table. It's worth asking Seminole County officials for the actual vendor contract, the retention policy, and who else has data-sharing access to that network. Flock's own audit trails have shown departments sharing data far outside their jurisdiction, and a line item in a budget won't tell you that story.

If you're in Seminole County or anywhere else wondering whether these cameras have shown up near you, check our map to see what's already been documented, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back at your next council meeting.
