Flock Safety: Why I Don't Trust These Cameras

The XRAY Podcast · 2 weeks ago

The short version: The XRAY Podcast lays out why Flock Safety's ALPR network deserves skepticism, not a free pass — and we agree.

Our Take

The XRAY Podcast is asking the question more Americans need to be asking: why should we trust a private company's camera network to watch where we drive, every single day, with almost no public oversight? That skepticism is the whole point of this site. Flock Safety didn't earn its spread across thousands of U.S. communities through public debate — it earned it through quiet city council votes, police department sales pitches, and a business model built on normalizing surveillance before anyone asks hard questions.

The trust problem isn't abstract. These cameras log your plate, your location, and your timestamp, and that data doesn't stay local — it can be shared across agencies and jurisdictions with little transparency about who's pulling it and why. No warrant, no probable cause, just a net cast over everyone to maybe catch someone. That's not how a free society is supposed to police itself, and it's worth real scrutiny every time a new pole goes up.

Credit to The XRAY Podcast for putting this in front of a wider audience — the more people who understand how this technology actually works, the harder it gets for it to expand unchecked.
