Furious Residents STEAMROLL City Council Over Flock Cameras

TheDC Shorts · 2 months ago

The short version: A TheDC Shorts clip shows residents blasting a city council over Flock Safety cameras, proof that local pushback is one of the few real checks on ALPR expansion.

Our Take

Credit to TheDC Shorts for capturing what a lot of city councils would rather you not see: regular people standing up at a public meeting and saying, in no uncertain terms, that they don't want a network of license plate cameras logging their every drive around town. We don't know every detail of what was said in this particular meeting, but the scene is familiar. Flock Safety pitches these systems to council members as a quiet, low-cost crime-fighting upgrade, and by the time residents find out cameras are already bolted to poles on their street, the contract is signed and the vote is treated as a formality.

That's exactly why moments like this matter. Council members are elected to represent the people who show up and object, not just to rubber-stamp whatever a vendor's sales deck promises. When residents push back hard enough to visibly rattle a council, it's a reminder that these deployments are not inevitable — they're policy choices, made in public meetings, that can still be challenged, delayed, or reversed if enough people show up and ask hard questions about data retention, who gets access to the footage, and what happens when it's misused.

If you want to see whether Flock or similar ALPR cameras have already shown up in your own city, check our camera map, and if you're ready to make noise at your next council meeting like the residents in this video, our take-action resources can help you get started.
