America Is Watching Everything You Do

Kueker · 4 weeks ago

The short version: A new Kueker video surveys America's sprawling camera state — traffic cams, ALPRs, facial recognition — and the takeaway is simple: it's bigger than most people realize.

Our Take

Credit to Kueker for stitching together what most of us experience as scattered, isolated cameras into the fuller picture: a genuinely nationwide surveillance patchwork. That's exactly the framing we push here, because Flock Safety and its ALPR competitors count on the public never connecting the dots between the camera at the gas station, the one at the subdivision entrance, and the one outside city hall. Individually they look like harmless traffic tech. Stacked together and shared across departments, they become a map of everywhere you've driven.

The video's broader strokes — traffic cameras, plate readers, facial recognition — are worth taking seriously precisely because none of these systems were put to a real public vote in most towns. Police departments signed subscription contracts, councils rubber-stamped them in a ten-minute agenda item, and suddenly a private company has a rolling log of every vehicle movement in the county, often retained far longer than most residents assume and shared with agencies far outside local control.

If this kind of video makes you want to know what's actually watching your own street, don't stop at the general awareness — go look. We've crowdsourced the map of known ALPR locations so you can see what's near you, and if you want to push back on a camera going up in your town, our take-action page has the tools to start.
