Flock Cameras Helped Find a Kidnapped Teen Alive

DeadHourHQ · 2 months ago

The short version: DeadHourHQ's clip highlights a Flock-assisted recovery in Thornton, CO, but one good outcome doesn't settle the bigger debate over blanket ALPR surveillance.

Our Take

Credit to DeadHourHQ for pulling together this short on a genuinely good outcome: a missing teen found alive, a suspect arrested, and license plate reader hits apparently playing a role in narrowing the search area. Nobody at DeFlock is going to pretend that's not a relief. These are the stories Flock Safety leads with because they're the easiest to defend, and law enforcement loves a win they can point cameras at.

But a single recovery story isn't an audit. It doesn't tell us how many plates get scanned and logged for every one actual kidnapping case, how long that data sits in a database, who else can query it, or whether the same network gets used for immigration sweeps, abortion-related travel tracking, or just garden-variety fishing expeditions by agencies with no judicial oversight. 'It helped find a missing kid' is a real data point, not a blank check for a surveillance system that photographs and timestamps the movements of everyone, suspected of nothing, every single day.

If you want to see how far this infrastructure has already spread near you, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be asking harder questions before signing another Flock contract, our take-action page has a place to start.
