Warnock urges Justice Department to add safeguards to Flock camera use

CBS Atlanta · 1 week ago

The short version: Sen. Warnock is asking the Justice Department to rein in Flock ALPR abuse, a rare bipartisan admission that these networks need real guardrails.

Our Take

Credit to CBS Atlanta for flagging that Sen. Raphael Warnock is pressing the Justice Department to set safeguards on how law enforcement uses Flock Safety's license plate readers. When a sitting U.S. senator feels compelled to ask the feds to intervene, it's a pretty clear signal that the current patchwork of local policies and vendor promises isn't cutting it.

This matters because Flock's network has grown into a de facto national tracking system with almost no uniform federal rules governing retention, access, or cross-agency data sharing. Local police departments adopt these cameras with little public debate, and once the data exists, it tends to get shared far beyond its original purpose — immigration enforcement, abortion-related investigations, and more. Asking DOJ to step in acknowledges what communities have been saying for years: self-regulation by the surveillance industry isn't enough.

Whether this pressure produces actual safeguards remains to be seen, and we'll be watching closely. In the meantime, check our camera map to see where Flock readers are operating near you, and visit take action if you want to push your own local officials before Washington gets around to it.
