Flock cameras appear across Huntsville, sparking privacy concerns

FOX54 News Huntsville · 3 months ago

The short version: FOX54's Huntsville report shows the same pattern playing out nationwide: Flock cameras go up quietly, and residents are left asking who approved them and why.

Our Take

Credit to FOX54 News Huntsville for actually asking the question most local outlets skip: who signed off on this, and what happens to the data? That's the right instinct. These cameras don't show up because a city council held a loud public debate and voters weighed in — they show up because a vendor pitched a police chief, a contract got signed, and poles got installed on public right-of-way nobody was watching. Huntsville residents are now doing what communities across the country are doing after the fact: finding the cameras and asking questions that should have been answered before installation.

What makes this story typical rather than unusual is exactly the problem. Flock's pitch is always the same — faster case clearance, stolen cars recovered, a tool for cops. What rarely gets mentioned up front is that every plate, not just suspects' plates, gets logged, time-stamped, and stored, often shared across a statewide or national network of agencies with no uniform standard for who can query it or why. A camera marketed as crime-fighting infrastructure is, mechanically, a mass movement-tracking system that happens to also catch the occasional stolen car.

If you're in Huntsville and wondering whether there's a Flock camera on your commute, check our camera map to see what's already been documented in Alabama and nearby. And if you want to push back — at a council meeting, through a public records request, or just by asking your police department tough questions about retention and access policies — our take-action page has a starting point.
