Brazos County Sheriff’s Office goes on record about its Flock camera system

KBTX News · 2 weeks ago

The short version: KBTX pressed Brazos County's sheriff on its Flock network, and any time a local agency goes on record is a chance to pin down real policy answers.

Our Take

Credit to KBTX News for getting a Brazos County sheriff's official to sit down on camera and talk about the department's Flock Safety system. That's exactly the kind of local accountability journalism this issue needs — most ALPR deployments roll out with a press release and zero follow-up, so a reporter actually asking questions is worth applauding, whatever answers came back.

The real test isn't whether a sheriff says the cameras are for solving crimes; it's whether the public can get straight answers on retention periods, who else can query the data, whether it's shared with ICE or out-of-state agencies, and what happens when the system flags the wrong car. Vague reassurances about 'public safety' don't tell you who's watching the watchers. Brazos County residents deserve a published policy, not just a sound bite.

If you're in Brazos County or anywhere else in Texas, check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and if your local agency hasn't been transparent about its Flock contract, our take-action page has steps for getting real public-records answers instead of talking points.
