Mt. Juliet Police preparing to launch 24/7 drone response program

FOX NASHVILLE · 4 months ago

The short version: Mt. Juliet, Tennessee is rolling out a 24/7 Drone as First Responder program, adding eyes-in-the-sky to a surveillance stack that already likely includes ALPRs.

Our Take

Fox Nashville's report on Mt. Juliet's upcoming Drone as First Responder program is worth watching closely, and credit to their newsroom for getting ahead of the rollout. "DFR" programs sound futuristic and efficient, but they're really just another layer in the same playbook we track every day: normalize constant automated monitoring, pitch it as pure public safety, and quietly expand what police can watch, store, and cross-reference without a warrant.

Drones don't operate in a vacuum. Departments that adopt 24/7 aerial response almost always already have or soon add networked license plate readers, facial recognition tips, and real-time crime center feeds. Put a drone program next to an existing Flock Safety ALPR network and you get a town where cars are tracked block by block and now the sky is watched too — with little public input on retention, data sharing, or who else gets access to that footage down the line.

Mt. Juliet residents deserve real answers before this goes live: who audits the drone footage, how long is it kept, and does it get shared with federal agencies or private vendors. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and head to take action if you want to push back before drones become just another rubber-stamped expansion.
