Flock U - see the plate readers, and route around them

Flock U · 1 month ago

The short version: A new app, Flock U, lets drivers map and route around known ALPR cameras in their city, treating surveillance avoidance as a feature.

Our Take

Flock U, from Waterview Technologies, takes a pretty simple idea and runs with it: if hundreds of plate readers in your city are logging where you drive, why not see them and plan around them? The demo shows a single city with 568 known cameras, each one quietly timestamping your location every time you pass. That's the whole business model of automated license plate readers in one sentence — normalize blanket tracking until it's just part of the road.

We like that the app says every claim is sourced and checkable, because that's exactly the standard this fight needs. Too much of the ALPR rollout in American towns has happened with zero public audit trail: no community vote, no retention policy readers can verify, no easy way to know how many cameras are actually out there. A tool that forces transparency, even a paid consumer app, chips away at that opacity. It won't stop Flock Safety or police departments from adding more nodes next month, but it does hand regular drivers a map instead of a shrug.

The catch is obvious: a $4.99/month subscription to dodge surveillance your own tax dollars likely funded is a strange trade, and routing around cameras only works until the network fills in the gaps. The real fix is public, open data and policy fights at the city council level, not a workaround app. Check our own camera map for what's documented near you, and head to take action if you'd rather push back on the cameras than just drive around them. Credit to Flock U for making the invisible visible — now let's make it unnecessary.
