Columbus Pauses Flock Cameras After Alleged Misuse #Shorts #Columbus #FlockCameras

The short version: Columbus pulled the plug on CPD's Flock cameras after an officer allegedly ran the same plates hundreds of times, exposing how little oversight actually exists.

Our Take

Pique Media's short on Columbus is a textbook case of why "trust us, it's just for solving crimes" never holds up. One officer allegedly queried the same plates hundreds of times, and the only reason we know is because someone got caught — not because the system flagged it. That's the whole problem with ALPR networks: the audit trails exist on paper, but enforcement is reactive, after the damage to someone's privacy is already done.

Pausing the cameras and promising a public report is the bare minimum, and it only happened because this became impossible to ignore. The real question is how many other departments running Flock have officers doing the exact same thing right now with zero accountability. Mass plate surveillance isn't just a tool that can be "misused" — unrestricted, searchable logs of everyone's movement are the misuse, built into the design from day one.

If Columbus residents want to know what's watching their streets, or if you're in a city still rubber-stamping these contracts without real audit requirements, check our camera map and push your council for actual transparency before the next "pause" makes headlines.
