Questions remain on license plate readers on Arizona campus

KOLD NEWS 13 · 1 month ago

The short version: KOLD News 13 flags unanswered questions about license plate readers on an Arizona campus, underscoring how little oversight accompanies these rollouts.

Our Take

Another day, another campus quietly joining the ALPR club with more questions than answers. KOLD News 13's reporting on this Arizona installation hits on a pattern we see again and again: cameras go up, administrators offer vague reassurances about "safety," and the actual policy details — who can access the data, how long it's retained, whether it's shared with ICE or other agencies — stay murky or unaddressed entirely.

Campuses are an easy sell for this tech. Parents want to feel their kids are protected, and "license plate reader" sounds a lot less alarming than "permanent record of everywhere your car has been." But a university parking lot camera network still feeds into the same surveillance infrastructure that's been used for immigration enforcement, tracking protesters, and stalking by abusive insiders at Flock and its competitors. Credit to KOLD for pressing on the unanswered questions instead of just running the press release.
