Cam Higby’s Viral Fox News Moment 😳
The short version: Derrick Evans spotlights a Flock defender's viral meltdown and plagiarism drama, distracting from the real debate over ALPR surveillance.
Our Take
Derrick Evans' latest short pulls back the curtain on Cam Higby, a vocal defender of Flock Safety's camera network, who's now embroiled in a personal drama involving a resurfaced Fox News clip and accusations of stealing other creators' work. It's the kind of internet spectacle that's easy to laugh at, and credit to Evans for catching the internet's attention on it — but we think it's worth pausing on what this sideshow reveals.
When the loudest public defenders of mass surveillance infrastructure get more attention for their personal meltdowns than for actually defending the policy merits of blanket license plate tracking, that tells you something. The debate over whether a network of automated cameras should log every car that passes through your town deserves serious scrutiny, not a popularity contest between influencers. Drama like this can suck the oxygen out of the actual conversation: who has access to this data, how long it's retained, and whether any of it makes communities safer.
We'd rather keep the focus where it belongs — on the cameras themselves and who's accountable for them. Check our map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR deployment in your community, our take-action page has concrete steps to get started.
