The short version: The Deflock channel spotlights deflock.org, the crowdsourced map tracking license plate readers nationwide — exactly the kind of transparency this fight needs.
Our Take
Credit to the Deflock team for putting a face on what their project actually does: turning scattered sightings of license plate reader cameras into a single, searchable map. That's not a small thing. Flock Safety and its competitors have spent years quietly bolting cameras onto utility poles and stop signs with little public notice, and the only real counterweight has been ordinary people noticing the hardware and reporting it.
This is the same instinct behind our own camera map — if these systems are going to track where you drive, you deserve to know where they are. Crowdsourced mapping flips the power dynamic a little: instead of departments and private companies controlling all the information about surveillance infrastructure, the public builds its own record, one submission at a time.
