Do Not Damage Flock Cameras the Person Hyping You Up Is on Their Couch and You Catch the Felony

Who is Mike James · 2 months ago

The short version: Mike James makes a fair point: smashing Flock cameras feels cathartic but only you eat the felony charge while keyboard warriors cheer from their couch.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Who is Mike James is making a point we've been making too — vigilante vandalism is a trap. Every viral clip of a Flock camera getting knocked down or spray-painted comes with an army of anonymous accounts hyping it up, and none of those accounts are going to show up to your arraignment. Destruction of property charges, especially on government or quasi-government infrastructure, can escalate fast, and prosecutors love an easy felony with video evidence already uploaded by the perpetrator.

The frustration is legitimate. These cameras log your plate, your location, and your travel patterns whether or not you've ever been suspected of a crime, and most people never consented to living inside that dragnet. But rage against the machine has to be smarter than a crowbar. Public records requests, city council meetings, contract audits, and organized local pressure have actually gotten ALPR programs paused or killed in multiple towns — that's a slower fight, but it's one that doesn't end with you in handcuffs while the hype-man keeps scrolling.

If you want to know exactly where these cameras are watching in your area, check the map, and if you're ready to push back the legal way, our take-action page has real steps that don't come with a court date.
