The pole you've never noticed is logging your plate #Shorts

Flock U · 2 months ago

The short version: A quick Flock U short reminds drivers that unnoticed poles are silently photographing and logging every plate, whether or not you've done anything wrong.

Our Take

The video's title says it all: that pole on the corner isn't just holding up a streetlight or a stop sign — it's very possibly logging your plate, your timestamp, and your location, and stitching that into a searchable trail of your daily life. Flock U deserves credit for putting a face on infrastructure most drivers never register. That's the whole game with mass ALPR surveillance: it works precisely because it's boring and invisible, easy to drive past ten times a day without ever clocking that you've been cataloged ten times.

More than 100,000 of these cameras nationwide isn't a hypothetical dragnet — it's the current baseline, and it grows every time a city council approves a new contract without much public debate. The reader doesn't care if you're a commuter, a domestic violence survivor trying to stay hidden, a journalist, or someone driving to a protest. It logs everyone, indiscriminately, and that data doesn't just evaporate — it gets stored, shared, and sometimes misused, all with essentially none of the oversight that would apply to a cop physically tailing you.

Short videos like this one are a good on-ramp, but the real work is knowing what's actually near you. Check our camera map to see what's logging your commute, and head to our take-action page if you want to push back on a system that was built without asking anyone's permission.
