DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM/PROJECT AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City Council has
authorized placing a ballot measure on the November 3rd general election ballot to ask voters to increase the
City’s Transportation Benefit District (TBD) sales tax rate to 0.3%.
To successfully place this item on the ballot, the City must follow state law and the regulations of the Mason
County Auditor’s Office/Elections Department. One of these laws requires the City to solicit for individuals to be
appointed to pro and con committees related to this ballot measure.
Appointed committee members work together, and with the Elections Department, to write statements that are
included in the local voter’s pamphlet. Committee members appointed by the City must write their arguments
and submit them electronically to the Elections Department before 4:00 p.m. on the 10th day after the resolution
submission deadline.
The City sent out a press release, posted on social media, and posted on our website as part of the solicitation
process. Kathy McDowell and Mike Olsen have reached out to City staff and are interested in serving on the
pro committee. We did not receive any applications for the con committee.
ANALYSIS/OPTIONS/ALTERNATIVES:
BUDGET/FISCAL INFORMATION: No impact.
PUBLIC INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS: Information can be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION/MOTION: Staff recommends: “I move that we appoint Kathy McDowell and Mike
Olsen to serve on the pro committee for the Transportation Benefit District ballot measure.”
