Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about who we are, how this works, and where your money goes. Still curious? Ask us anything.

Are you affiliated with DeFlock or the camera map?

No. The map is powered by the open-source, volunteer-run DeFlock project. We host and support their data because it’s excellent, but we are an independent, for-profit brand — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with them. We encourage you to support their project directly, too.

Isn’t this surveillance stuff just about keeping people safe?

That’s the pitch, and we’re not anti-safety. We’re anti-unaccountable. There’s a real difference between using a tool to solve a specific crime and recording every driver’s movements, all the time, with no warrant, no retention limit, and no audit of who searches the data. We push for rules, oversight, and public debate — not for pretending the cameras don’t exist.

Where does my money go?

Hosting and building this site, aggregating the news, maintaining the tools, keeping the camera map free, and the hours it takes to run a small independent operation. It does not go to investors, tracking-based ads, or data brokers — we don’t take money from any of them. See About for the full breakdown.

Is buying merch tax-deductible?

No. We’re a for-profit brand, not a registered nonprofit, so a purchase is not a charitable donation. We’d rather be honest about that than dress up a t-shirt sale as a tax write-off.

Do you track me on this site?

We’ll be straight about it: we use Google Analytics to see which articles land and where visitors come from, so we can improve the site and reach more people. That’s standard web analytics — we don’t run ad-retargeting pixels, and we never sell your personal information. Prefer not to be counted? Any tracker-blocking browser extension will stop it. The full details are in our Privacy Policy.

How accurate is the camera map?

It’s crowd-sourced through the open-source DeFlock project, so it’s a strong, growing picture — but not a guarantee. Cameras get added and removed in the real world faster than any map can perfectly track. Treat it as “here’s what’s been reported near you,” and help improve it by reporting what you find.

I found a camera — how do I report it or get it removed?

To add a camera to the map, contribute to the DeFlock project. Removing a real camera is a government and vendor decision, not something a map can do — that’s where local pressure comes in. Our Take Action guides walk through records requests and council meetings.

How can I get involved beyond buying something?

Plenty of ways that cost nothing: look up your town on the map, file a public records request, speak at a council meeting, and share what you find with neighbors. Awareness is the whole game.

What about shipping and returns?

Orders ship across all 50 states, with free shipping over $60. Full details are on our Shipping and Returns pages.
